v.

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, et al., Defendants

Federal Defendants' August 2000 DNA Analysis Progress Report

Pursuant to the Federal Defendants' Work Plan for Completing the DNA Analysis, submitted in accordance with the Court's Order of March 8, 2000, Federal Defendants hereby provide their fourth monthly progress report regarding completion of the DNA analysis. See Plan for Conducting DNA Investigation of the Kennewick Remains, filed April 10, 2000 ("DNA Work Plan"). The DNA testing and analysis is continuing at the three DNA laboratories that received bone samples from the Kennewick human remains. See attached declaration of Dr. Francis McManamon (1). To date, none of the laboratories has reported the successful extraction and amplification of DNA from these human remains. Id. All three of the laboratories will continue their efforts to extract and amplify DNA using a variety of protocols. Id. Federal Defendants anticipate that by September 1, 2000, the laboratories will either have completed the DNA analysis or have determined that testing is not viable. This date is consistent with the schedule set forth in the DNA Work Plan.

Dated this 1st day of August 2000.

Respectfully submitted
